Press Release: New website brings storytellers, slam poets, and spoken word artists together to unite voices for social change
Boston, MA. Speak2BFree.com, new social niche networking site aimed at unifying the often fragmented community of storytellers, spoken word artists, and slam poets into a global voice for change, launched in its beta form today. The website, the passion project of spoken word artist and entrepreneur Vangile Makwakwa, combines targeted technology with global emphasis to give poets a previously nonexistent network to not only connect and collaborate with each other but also to promote themselves outside of their local poetry communities.
Among the features that the website offers are a personalized multimedia profile url for artists to upload verse in print, MP3 or video format; a blog with emphasis on the practical elements of publishing and promoting art and poetry in the contemporary Internet era; and a planned rollout of a venue and events promotion tool that can be used worldwide. The site will make it easy for poets and artists to centralize their portfolio and then promote it in an arena that shifts away from the often localized or regionalized poetry and spoken word community into one that is global in both the virtual and actual world.
Says founder Vangile Makwakwa, “I was very inspired by Martin Luther King’s quote, ‘Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.’ That quote formed the basis of our slogan: ‘We begin to live our lives when we tell our stories.’ Through Speak 2B Free, we hope to empower artists to become free of social and self-imposed limitations and find power in telling their stories. Once artists and individuals realize their empowerment, they can enact real change in the world.”
In the site’s beta format, users can join and set up their customized multimedia url while beginning to explore the site’s blog and other features. Speak 2B Free’s objective is to use technology to bring artists across the globe together in order to promote storytelling and spoken word poetry, provide practical advice, and, ultimately, empower storytellers and poets.
